I had a major scare today with both boys. I fell

I had a major scare today with both boys.

I fell while holding the baby, then the toddler tripped over us and face-planted.

Lots of blood, thankfully no concussions, but man,
my nervous system is WRECKED.

The boys are both thankfully totally okay, my lower back is TBD, but I keep replaying the incident over and over again. I keep hearing certain sounds, seeing certain images.

In the past I would’ve poured myself into work. I would’ve been equally anxious about missing appointments and rescheduling everything as soon as the kids were napping.

But today, I did it differently.

I had to, because my boys were watching me. They were scared and they needed to regulate too.

So I let them stay home and we have stayed quiet all day (I mean other than shooting a rocket launcher in the backyard).

But the most nourishing thing I’ve done so far, since I can’t really bust into a restorative pose or take a nap while watching my baby, is take him to the water and get low to the ground.

I immediately felt better and I think he did too.

If you’ve had a big scare or upset recently and you have a tendency to plow ahead, I invite you to try something different.

Get outside. Get low and get still.

“There is a common misconception that postpartum depression only lasts the first year of pregnancy, which is one of the reasons it took Leah until her eldest child was 1.5 years old to be diagnosed.

Everyone kept reassuring her that what she was experiencing—panic attacks and feeling “o�ff” was the “baby blues” and that it would go away. So, she assumed (hoped) it would...

It was after moving from London to super-charged and fast-moving New York City when Leah’s panic attacks became so debilitating that she finally sought help….” an excerpt from @leahsoojinkim ‘s story in The Yoga of Parenting.

Leah bravely opened up about her experience with Postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD and PTSD from a traumatic birth for the book and I’m so thankful for her willingness to shine a light on some pretty dark times in an effort of helping others.

Have you ever made art and had zero memory of the process or even what you made?

I think art is a conduit for the divine, an outlet for our collective unconscious. There have been so many times where I go back and read something I wrote and im like, “who wrote that?!” bc it doesn’t sound like me…

Well, call me woo woo, but I don’t think those instances are me. At least not conscious Sarah here on planet earth.

My kids don’t define me, but they sure helped me

My kids don’t define me, but they sure helped me get clear on who I truly am.

A lot of my initial resistance to having a family was around a fear of loss.

I had a fear of losing them, but I was/am equally afraid of losing myself.

I work really hard every day to maintain my sense of self in motherhood—even when my needs may conflict with my children or my husband.

It’s not easy and not everyone in my family gets it, but I do. I get it.

Becoming a mother has forced me to get super clear on who I am and what I need.

Am I ALL mom ALL the time? No. It’s a huge part of me, but I am so much more, and fighting to maintain those separate aspects of self has actually helped me define them.

I love my children more than words can express. I am so glad I am a mom. But I am also still Sarah.

Motherhood is not where I am going to lose myself, it is a path to my truest self.

Britta shared about her hero’s journey (get it? Mythology reference) from being a young Ashtanga practitioner in Mysore, to becoming Maty Ezraty’s right hand at @yogaworks, to teaching prenatal yoga, to eventually becoming a child birth educator, completing her PHD and writing her amazing book!

We get into a lot from control (lack of?), to the evolution of our asana practices now as mum’s, to the reimagining of the traditional baby shower (and Xmas!).

Your Instagram feed likely features teachers and practitioners of all identities, sizes, shapes, ages, colors, backgrounds, and abilities. Athletic wear companies include more realistic mannequins than the ones of years past. Ads for yoga studios typically include at least one larger-bodied person.

These much-needed changes constitute forward momentum compared to recent decades, when slender, white, seemingly Cirque du Soleil-abled individuals predominantly represented yoga. Change is happening.

But when we look at the fuller picture of yoga as a mirror of society, there’s been an inch of movement to the light years of distance we still need to traverse….”

Potential unpopular opinion: my kids are not my wh

Potential unpopular opinion: my kids are not my whole world.

I do not exist solely for my children’s benefit.

And one word I am trying to remove from my self-descriptive vocabulary (and suggest you do to) right now, is SELFISH.

Meeting our own needs is not selfish. Putting ourselves first is not selfish. Choosing you is not selfish.

It’s actually unfair to our kids when we self sacrifice to the point that they become our whole world.

What an emotional burden we become when we seek fulfillment through them alone!

It’s not selfish to take care of yourself. It is self-preservation, because if you lose yourself in parenthood, then who is left to take care of your kids?

I no longer practice for poses, and wow, what a relief.

I practice so I can play on the floor with my babies.

I practice so I can pick them up.

I practice so I can keep holding them, even as they grow too heavy for my arms.

I practice so I can be present with my family.

I practice so I don’t miss a moment of the madness that is family life.

I still do poses and I still appreciate the discipline it takes to work toward something.

But personally, where my yoga has been the most impactful has never been, and will never be a shape I make with my body.

My practice is most impactful at shaping my entire life.

I used to think I needed the perfect conditions to practice.

If I was doing asana or meditating and there was a leaf blower outside or a loud breather next to me, I would be completely thrown off.

How dare they disrupt my peace?!

The longer I practiced for, and honestly, the more people I started living with, the more I realized that the most advanced practice is the one that happen despite the chaos.

It’s easy to drop in when you’re alone, but can you find that same peace in a full house?

As @mindfulmamamentor wrote in her must-read book Raising Good Humans, “Six months with a preschooler can be more e�ffective than years alone on a mountain top.”

You don’t need 2hrs alone and a quiet space to do yoga. Parenting IS a practice and our children can be our best yoga teachers.
