It’s a sleight of hand distracting us from the very real issues mothers face, like the stripping of our rights and the total lack of support and resources.

Here’s a bouquet, but you still have to leave behind your 6 week old and go back to work...

Here’s breakfast in bed, but you will still have to buy all the groceries for it and empty the dishwasher tomorrow…

Here’s a fancy dinner, that costs a fraction of a few hours of childcare…

Next year, I’m opting out of expecting a single day will solve all of this. 

And I’m opting in to supporting groups that are making real, lasting change. Like @chamberofmothers and @momsdemand

Moms don’t want flowers for Mother’s Day 🙅🏻‍♀️ 

We want to be free of ANY responsibilities and spoiled rotten. And that’s exactly what me and one of my neighborhood mom besties @becca_solveig did yesterday!

We took a trip from Marin to the Ferry Building (which always feels like a vacay even when I lived in the city). Did a little shopping and browsing and smelling (omg the food!)

Then we headed over to @hogislandoysterco where a dad from our community has been GM for about 15yrs. We were taken amazing care of and had delicious oysters (this is my personality now- baseball and oyster mom).

We could’ve easily taken the ferry, which would’ve made this even more of an adventure but we had to be back for pick-up, so we drove. 

10/10 recommend grabbing your moms friends (or your fam…I guess😉) and visiting the @ferrybuilding and @hogislandoysterco for Mother’s Day or any day.

Now, I know firsthand that even if that woman is on her phone it’s for a good reason. Even if she’s choosing to check out and scroll on social. We’re all just surviving!

What if instead of judging moms for “doing too much” or assuming they’re doing too little, we offered support?

Most of you know I have a long history with d1s0rd3ered eating and over-exercising so I’d been extremely hesitant to join anything where I was tracking my food or body.

Jessica Zucker’s new book Normalize It is a must Jessica Zucker’s new book Normalize It is a must read for any woman and anyone who loves a woman.

The book discusses experiences that may lead to shame starting from menstruation to menopause. 

Jessica draws on her decades of clinical practice and clientele to create compositions of women experiencing each of these and how they managed their shame.

Today we covered a LOT, but my fave parts are when we talked about how to handle a vulnerability hangover. 

Because as healing as it is to share, there is an inevitable rebound on the other side, and for those who are newer to vulnerability and honesty, it’s important to know that this is SO Normal.

You may need a little time and tenderness but keep sharing. Your story is healing for another.

The anger, the fear, the overwhelming overwhelm, t The anger, the fear, the overwhelming overwhelm, the obsession, the compulsions, none of it was just “because postpartum is hard”…as so many new mums are gaslit into thinking…

So many women go undiagnosed or unsupported. Their symptoms are written off as just hormones” or simply labeled “postpartum”.

Postpartum is a period of time not a diagnosis. 

And too many are suffering silently because we don’t have a name for what we’re experiencing. 

I can’t tell you the relief I felt once it had a name—once I had a diagnosis.

Because once it had a name, we could have a plan, set up a support system, and I could start to care for myself in the way I needed to, without guilt and shame.

If you’re questioning whether what you’re feeling is “normal”, if you’re frozen or manic, or crying non stop or unable to cry at all…if you’re yelling and angry or flat…ask for support. 

None of it is normal. This system, doing postpartum alone. You need support. And sometimes you need a diagnosis.

Like, if we can’t “clear our mind” why bother meditating?

Mindfulness is the practice of witnessing without story or judgment. You don’t need a $40 yoga class or babysitter to do that.

Step outside and observe. That’s meditating.

I’ve been careful not to talk about food or weight around my kids, but I haven’t been as careful with the self-deprecating jokes…

And now I’m seeing my kids be sensitive about parts of THEIR body that I joked about with my own. 

Like not wanting to show their legs after I joked I was blinding everyone with mine.🥺🤦🏻‍♀️

Our words hold immense weight as parents. Our jokes maybe more so. 

So this a gentle invitation to us all: Let’s shift our negative self-talk zingers to self-love affirmations🙏🏻

Our kids may not listen to us, but they always hear us.

So what if you didn’t make it to the gym this week, I bet you’ve still been carrying around 30 to 40 pound sandbags 🏋🏻‍♀️

Give yourself some grace that your workouts/yoga/meditation will not look like they used to for this phase. 

Doesn’t make them any less powerful or advanced. I’d argue they’re more so.

I’m often asked in interviews what my yoga pract I’m often asked in interviews what my yoga practice looks now that I’m a busy mom. 

I think people expect me to tell them what I do with my body, but my answer rarely includes poses or movement.

Yoga is ANYTHING we do in connection. Connection with other, connection with self, connection with Source.

So my daily practice these days is being with my kids. It’s being in nature. My practice is prayer. My practice is heavy lifting at F45. My practice is community. 

I haven’t done a handstand since before my first pregnancy, but my practice is the deepest it’s ever been.

PS For the record, I highly advise against buying any sage brand new since it has been completely over-harvested. But if you happen to have some old stuff from college or something, it’s still powerful even 20 years later.
