They were always puddles of white with black speck

They were always puddles of white with black speckled hairs.
They chafed red in the summer.
And poured out from beneath my clothes.
They were conversation pieces for complete strangers,
“Are you a dancer?”
“Your calves are so thick.”
Even at my most slender—even when I weighed less
than a hundred pounds—I couldn’t seem to shrink them.

They were always long, I’ll give them that.
I’d wrap them around my head in yoga and the heads of my lovers.
I’d wear the short shorts and mini skirts, but in every photo
or glance at my reflection, they felt like an assault to my eyes.

Until now…
Now, in midlife where I look at my legs and all I see is strength.
I see power.

I see the roots that nourish my children and
connect my family to the forest floor.

I see pillars that hold the weight of the world and are somehow still standing.

I no longer want sticks for legs.
Sticks snap. They bend and they break.

I am finally grateful for these legs with their lily white skin
and spackled bruises and spider veins.

What a gift to walk the world on tree trunks, touching earth
and heaven at the same time.
