I KEEP LEARNING

I’m having an amazing time with the one and only @thejillmiller this week for her Body By Breath Immersion.

I’ve been taking a ton of trainings lately. I’ve been signing up for pretty much any free class my fave master teachers are offering (which is a LOT and often these days🫠) and I’ve also been signing up for a ton of fuller length teachings and certifications.

It’s so humbling and overwhelming, as a lot of what I’m learning is changing how I want to lead movement but you know what?!

I frickin love it.

I love being a student. I love evolving. I love learning that I was wrong for however many years and being able to confidently stand in front of a group of people and say “I was wrong”🤷🏻‍♀️

If you lead people in any form (teacher, facilitator, provider) , the wisest thing we can do is admit we don’t know and just keep learning.

Controversial opinion: Parents have to prioritize themselves.

🗣️👏🏻Our nervous system health and mental health MUST take priority over anyone or anything else in our family.

Did you know your kids borrow your nervous system for most of their childhood??? Our NS informs their responses to the world.

It’s beautiful and it’s a privilege, but OMG….it’s F-ing exhausting.

It means we have to be grounded and contained enough to hold space for our kid’s BIG emotions.

How can we hold anything if we are deep in survival mode and under constant stress???

Real quick: PLZ NOTE I’m NOT saying we have to be calm all the time.

Instead we can learn to ride the waves of our NS like a skilled surfer and through our modeling, teach our kids to do the same.

What a gift.

These are my TOP 3 TIPS for settling my nervous system when I’m with my kids:

✅ Get outside - nature, man. Need I say more?

✅ Movement- run, play tag, go for walks. Just get the energy flowing

✅ Singing- immediate #vagalnervestimulation

This isn’t about teaching them to be robots who don’t feel….this is about giving them the skills and guidance they need to be a fully feeling human being.

Did you know our shoulder girdle is an integral part of our core canister? Think the core of an apple.

Core stability is the ability to keep our trunk to stay steady while we move our limbs. If our shoulders are misaligned and our chest is tight, this inhibits easeful movement of the arms.

Tightness in the upper chest and torso is caused by lifestyle as much as it is by our intense workouts.

We spend a lot of time hunched over our devices with our heads protruding forward to see the screen. Then go to workout classes and lift heavy or do explosive movements in this misaligned shape.

No wonder so many of us have neck and shoulder pain!

This final session of Conscious Core at @f45_training_sanrafael will focus on shoulder stability and chest-opening. Join us May 11, 1030a!

Using breath and core stability as our guide, we will biomechanically optimize our upper body movements from the most basic action to the most complex movements.

What we will cover:

✅The relationship between our neck and our pelvic floor.

When people ask me if I’m still teaching yoga, I give them a 20min long explanation of how I left on my first maternity leave 5yrs ago and how I’m still on an extended maternity leave😴…..needless to say most strangers tuned me out seconds into my diatribe…

My anxiety trying to explain this grey space that is motherhood and entrepreneurship was HIGH for a long time…..until I found @motheruntitled and started learning from its CEO and founder Neha Ruch.

I realized that my five year long semi-maternity leave was actually a “downshift” or a “pause” and that it is a power move and privilege to make a choice and to be able to slow down for this once in a lifetime period.

Neha is changing how mother’s see themselves AND how society sees us. She’s teaching us to have grace and to unapologetically own whatever path we choose to be on during this moment in time.

Neha is brilliant in so many ways! She just hung out with Oprah like yesterday 😱 and I cannot WAIT for her forthcoming book!

My kid hit his head this morning and it was my fau

My kid hit his head this morning and it was my fault…

It was the usual morning madness, where he was resisting EVERYTHING and running away from me and the clock was ticking and I had to be “somewhere”.

So I chased him around the house and into our bedroom where he started sliding himself under our very big 4 poster bed. The same bed that I can barely get an arm under when I drop my sleep mask.

In milliseconds I had intrusive thoughts of an earthquake or a freak accident and of course, my ego was being rubbed the wrong way.

He was disobeying me! Me!!! Gentle, calm yoga mom who has it all together.

I pulled him out as fast as he tried to get under and he bonked his head and omg the guilt and horror I felt as he looked up to me with his big brown eyes, gasping for his next wail.

I felt so alone. Surely, the beautiful mom that lives around the corner and always shows up to school in full makeup and real clothes, has never done this.

I’d been on a doom scroll earlier that morning to momfluencers and I would bet none of them have ever made such a mistake!!!

I spent the rest of the morning repairing with my little and after a sweet drop off, I got in the car and realized: I never repaired with myself.

How does a mom do that? Are we allowed????

Because the truth of the matter is, every single mom I’ve ever talked to, no matter what country they’re in, has lost their sh-t in some form or another.

Maybe it’s not directed at the kid, but more ugly tears in the bathroom.

Either way! None of us is getting out of this unscathed and it’s soooo important for moms to open up to other moms precisely so we all can remember in those horribly tough times, that we’re not alone!

You know what’s a bunch of bullsh*t? This idea that we’re seeking to be calm all the time.

If we were calm all the time, nothing would get done!!!

Sure, we’d be in a prolonged state of gratitude, pleasure and joy, but how would we generate the means we need for survival? How would we share our dharma with the world? How would we go for a run or chase our kids?

All of those more upregulated responses are products of our sympathetic nervous system. The very same nervous system that triggers our fight and flight reactions.

Similarly, we need to be able to down regulate or we’d never be able to rest. This is managed by our parasympathetic nervous system.

I love sleeping. I love cuddling my dog and kids and doing savasana. I would hate to lose that ability!

Our nervous system is the source of our special powers. Learning to ride it’s vicissitudes can turn us into real life super heroes.

From the attention and care it takes to place every petal, to the foresight needed for the symmetry and design.

There’s a synchronicity in working together to create something so beautiful and so delicate…

Only to blow it all away upon completion.

This is abhyasa/vairagya—effort and non-attachment .

It’s the dual practice of treating something as if it’s the most important thing in the world to you and then letting it go as if it was never yours…

@yogajournal almost broke yesterday when I implored instructors to reconsider always using the cue “engage their core.”

Admittedly, my delivery could’ve been WAY softer 😬😬😬 and any of you who know me, know that I’m far from some angry podcast host yelling at people…

My intention is always to educate BUT there‘s another huge reason beyond physical safety that I’m so passionate about us examining this particular cue….

I feel that blindly cuing “engage your core” reflects our culture’s obsession with “flat abs” and “strong cores” and how we pursue those things (and sell them!) to the detriment of our breath and the rest of the body.

If our intention is to ✨create stability for our spine✨ then I ASK US ALL: are there less capitalistic: more, more, more/ less diet-culturey/ less fat-phobic ways we could invite that?

A few of my faves are:

✅ Draw your belly in and up (*this makes it clear we want the abdominals to work)
✅ Corset your abdominals around your spine (*this activates our TVA)
✅ Stack your shoulders, ribs and spine (*aligning our spine automatically “turns on” core muscles as many are reflexive muscles)
✅ Maintain the natural curves of your spine as you… (*this can help prevent doming and baring down when supine)

You’re all right…

How we teach and how we practice are entirely personal, but I stand by inviting us to look at what cues we’ve been taught and ask:

🤷🏻‍♀️What message is this cue conveying? What belief system is this perpetuating?

🤷🏻‍♀️How is this cue ultimately affecting breath (which I think we all agree [hope?] is the priority in all poses)?

May all of us teachers remember that we’re students first 🙏🏼

I’m so hard on myself…it terrifies me to imagi

I’m so hard on myself…it terrifies me to imagine my kids speaking to themselves the way I talk to myself. (More posts and therapy sessions about that later, I guess🤦🏻‍♀️ 🫠)

One way I try to help them develop a kind internal voice is to choose what I say to them. After all, many of our inner voices were the voices of people from our past (and their past and their past).

Here are 3 things I always make sure to say to my kids:

✨ “Good effort!”- I try to highlight the effort over the end result . My internal voice when I mess up is usually like “ughghggh” and then some kind of insult. Good effort feels forgiving.

✨”Nothing is permanent except my love for you”- I get so fixated on perfection and there can be much self blame when things break or don’t last. Reminding my kids what is permanent (LOVE! CONNECTION!) and how everything else is impermanent feels like a nice way to teach what matters.

✨”Listen to your body”- OMG how many times did I not eat even though I was starved. Or over indulge when I was full? Or over do a pose/a job/a relationship. My hope in encouraging them to be the masters of their body and choices is to help guide them toward a lot embodied life.

To be fully honest, I do this just as much to heal myself as to be a good parent. That’s the beauty of conscious parenting! It’s an opportunity to take care of little you all over again.

Let’s be real: Motherhood is hard AF.

Many of us are drowning on a good day. Moms are expected to “do it all,” and often with very little support. We are responsible for so many things and so many people. We need a space where we can set it all down. A space where we can be held, instead of always being the ones doing the holding. We need a community who gets it. We need other moms.

I’ve officially joined the 21st century: I got gmail and I’m super into mushrooms.

Sooooo, I thought all my friends were just faking liking #mushroomcoffee for the affiliate sale🤦🏻‍♀️

But @ryzesuperfoods reached out about their new overnight oats, I was thought, “okayyyyy let’s see about all this” …

OMG.

You guys. I eat these oats every day and I drink mushroom coffee at least once a week (it’s been SUCH a nice alternative to black tea on anxious days).
