I didn’t know it wasn’t normal. Dreading the nigh I didn’t know it wasn’t normal.

Dreading the nights…

Wanting to wail and sleep but being unable to do either…

It was a pandemic, I told myself, “Of course being in public was scary.”

I was a first time mom, I reminded myself, “Of course I felt disconnected from my baby’s cues.”

We were without local grandparents, we lamented, “Of course we’re overwhelmed.”

But it wasn’t “normal”. Yes those things all played a part, but the invisible factor (the elephant in the room) was the complete lack of support for mothers once the baby is born.

(Not to mention my own brain chemistry)

The day finally came when I realized I couldn’t do motherhood alone. I needed a village and that included a team of mental health professionals…

We moved to a family-friendly neighborhood with deep roots and community and I started Prozac and going to women’s Al-Anon meetings.

With the support of other humans (and meds and God) I came back to myself. In fact, I was even more myself than when I began this journey.

I hope you’ll join @postpartumsupportcenter this Sunday May 17 for our annual Walk for Moms fundraiser in San Rafael.

This event is family friendly with bounce houses and food and I’m incredibly honored to be one of the speakers.

In postpartum, I could barely get dressed, let alo In postpartum, I could barely get dressed, let alone think about doing some form of yoga or even therapy.

It took me years (and a second baby) to learn that some mental health tools don’t have to take hours. Most can be done in a single minute.

If I could go back and give myself one tool, it would be *mantra*.

Mantras are sacred utterances that you can repeat aloud or silently which transform your mental state.

I particularly love using affirmation cards to help me get clear on which mantra is going to be the most powerful for me that day. Because with #mombrain you don’t always know what you even need.

It’s such a simple practice pulling a single card. There’s also a physical grounding that comes with touch.

I created the Mama Mantras for my postpartum self and for all the moms who just need an F-ing minute to ground but don’t know where to begin...

Right now, we’re offering a 60% off discount in honor of #maternalmentalhealthday and Mother’s Day.

Listen, nothing is a magic fix, but even the smallest bit of relief can make a difference.
